Red Mansions is based on a story written during the 18th Century by Chinese author Cao Xueqin, during the Qing Dynasty, entitled Dream of the Red Mansion, also known as Dream of the Red Chamber or The Story of the Stone. It is considered to be a literary masterpiece, and one of China’s great classical novels.
The novel is semi-autobiographical, and relates the happenings around the rise and fall of the Qing Dynasty. The novel is acclaimed for offering an insider’s perspective on the social structures of the time, and is regarded as very valuable from a historical point of view.
